You know the drill. Tournament is between 11/12th of September depending on your timezone. The rules in full are as follows:
Rules: East-only, Ari-Ari, Red, Fast (喰東アリ赤速)
Time: Saturday, 11 September 2010, 18:00:00 UTC - check your time here:
http://timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=11&month=9&year=2010&hour=18&min=0&sec=0Tournament type: Knockout, 3-4 rounds (depending on participants)
Location: #mahjong@irc.rizon.net and Tenhou (random lobbies per game)
To register, post the following:
- tenhou name
- IRC nick on irc.rizon.net: if you can't use IRC, you may not play
- your timezone, e.g. EST, UTC-5, etc. and/or your location (from which I can deduce your timezone)
You
must be able to use IRC, or the system does not work.
How the system works:
- you register
- later, game postings are published: this will tell each player in which lobby their first game is, and against whom
- you turn up to #mahjong@irc.rizon.net a bit earlier than the advertised time
- you message Alvin in #mahjong of your presence
- you join your applicable lobby and queue in the game type of the tournament (see above)
- you play your first game and, once complete, tell the full game result (not just yours) to Alvin in #mahjong (highlight) or private message Alvin on irc.rizon.net
- you wait for everybody else to have finished their games and completed the process above, and then wait for next-round postings to be published here (I'll link them in IRC)
- repeat the same process as before until we reach the final and are complete: if you do not turn up in a successive round, you have been knocked out because your score wasn't good enough
It is possible that I will opt for a two-game first round, in which case you will have two games to complete as soon as possible, likely against completely different players and in a different lobby. The sum of your scores will be taken as your final score, and the highest scoring players will advance. This will be clear when everybody has registered and the postings are published.
If you follow the instructions clearly you will not have to wait around long. Problems occur when people don't understand how the system works, but I have made it blatantly clear. You can see an example of how the system works in this thread:

If you can not participate after having registered, post here as soon as possible and/or message me (Alvin) on IRC. I will not be angry if you decide you don't want to play or something, as long as you tell me beforehand. If you tell me there and then on the day, or just don't turn up, I will be pissed off. In any case, absent players will be replaced by simplistic AI. In the absurd event that the AI places for successive rounds, you could win with your absence. I don't appreciate having to run bots, though. If you turn up late and a bot is playing for you as it is, it is up to me whether you can assume your position in the tournament.
